That's right,
Its bowl time- almost- and everybody's favorite football team- Kansas State- is in the playoffs!
maybe.
I mean the chances are almost none, BUT they still exist.
Here is how it happens.
First we need to know how the playoffs work.
FLASHBACK TIME! wooooOOOOOOoooo...oooooOOOOOOoooooo
Its 2012 and- as per the usual- people are complaining. Complaining about government, complaining about war, complaining about hunger, and complaining about how the college football champion is decided. So they DID SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Don't mind the first three things because the important thing is that they made the championship game different.
How did they do it? Well the system at the time was an absolute disaster- in the minds of a few important people. The system used complicated, computer calculations and votes from two polls that are made by people. People who all have the same idea about what teams are the best. Absolute garbage right?
So to eliminate all controversy from all of college football existence unto all eternity, they elected a (que holy-sounding music) "PLAYOFF SELECTION COMMITTEE". This committee is comprised of thirteen members of football greatness. It includes such great names as Steve Weiberg- a former USA today reporter, the chairman Jeff Long- the Athletic Director for the University of Arkansas- because we don't believe in bias, and Condoleezza Rice- the former Secretary of State... wait what? Oh and also there is Archie Manning, but he had to quit because of health issues. Ok, there isn't actually bias in the committee... at least not uneven bias, because each of the major conferences have one member in the committee that represents them. Yes ladies and gentlemen, it's just like that scene in Lord of the Rings when all of the great leaders of all the kingdoms of man and elves and dwarfs gather together to determine how to destroy the ring of power. Some say "We should include the team that has better wins over certain teams and give them a turn to try to destroy the ring." Others say "We should only include teams that are affiliated with the West division of the Rohan conference." Still others say "We should use the conference champion from all of the top divisions- Rohan, Gondor, the Dwarfs, and the Elves- and just call it good." Of course we all know that- according to the Lord of the Rings- in the end some no name team is going to get the chance to win the championship.
Anyway the job of the committee is to pick the four best teams in the nation by making a top 25 ranking that is exclusively based on the neutral assessment of the teams by the committee members. The top four get to go to the playoff games- the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl. The remaining highest-ranked teams get to go to other major bowl games The committee decides how to rank these teams based on different factors such as the following: strength of schedule, margin of victory, key victories, and most importantly money. Because money is all that... Oops, no wait I wasn't really going to say that. I promise that I was.. NO DONT BREAK MY COMPU SD?>TS?>D <?f 0380)(#&(*^$ B# )@
Ok I'm back and LIKE I WAS SAYING, there-is-no-conspiracy-to-make-money-and-I-am-not-being-forced-to-say-this-by-some-hit-men-in-my-house. Because this isn't about the money, K-State still has a shot to get into the top four and make it to the playoffs!
Here are the rankings currently
#1 THE HIGH AND MIGHTY ALABAMA! HAIL FUEHRER.. I mean ROLL TIDE (HAIL TIDE?)
Might as well be playing NOBODY (playing #16 Missouri on Saturday) 11-1
#2 NIKE inc. in Eugene, Oregon (Oregon)
(Playing #7 Arizona on Friday) 11-1
#3 TCU- that purple team that beat us earlier
(Playing #88 Iowa State on Saturday) 10-1
#4 Florida State University- the university of class- just not when it comes to their starting quarterback.
(Playing #11 Georgia Tech on Saturday) 12-0
#5 Ohio State, the school that lost an early one to an awful team but they look really good now
(Playing #12 Wisconsin on Saturday) 11-1
#6 DA BEARS! Waco, Texas version (Baylor)
(Playing Da #9 Wildcats on Saturday) 10-1
#7 Everyone's favorite wildcats... WAIT, that's not K-State, silly Arizona!
(Playing #2 Oregon on Friday) 10-2
#8 The Spartans that everyone forgot about once they lost to Ohio State. (Michigan State) 10-2
#9 Everyone's actual favorite wildcats, Kansas State
(Playing #6 Baylor) 9-2
#10 Mississippi State- the year that wasn't to be 10-2
#11 The hornets from Georgia that will in only a few days be the best team that FSU has played 10-2
#12 Not-New-but-new-to-having-a-good-year Miss (of Ole) [meaning Ole Miss] 9-3
#13 The badgers of Wisconsin that hope to defeat the OSU buckeyes on Saturday. 10-2
#14 Normal Georgia 9-3
#15 UCLA- the team that had one job ONE JOB- beat a team with a 6-5 record- and they blew it. 9-3
#16 Missour-we-could-beat-Alabama! NO YOU CAN'T 10-2
#17 Arizona State- the team that could be in Arizona's position right now if only they had beaten them. 9-3
#18 Clemson- WE FINALLY BEAT SOUTH CAROLINA! 9-3
#19 Au-burned out after letting the MIGHTY TIDE score 55 on them 8-4
#20 Oklahoma- Oh yeah, that one Big 12 team that got bullied by ALL the good teams in the Big 12. 8-3
#21 Lousville- the team that lost its coach and Quarterback last year.. and still managed to be the best team that FSU has faced all year. 9-3
#22 Boise State- the team that needs one more win to solidify a berth in a major bowl game 10-2
#23 Utah- the utes (hmm spellcheck doesn't recognize that one, nor does it recognize "spellcheck") 8-4
#24 LSU- one of the few teams that gave THE TIDE a hard time.8-4
#25 USC- the team that smacked Notre Dame off the face of the earth 49-14. 8-4
That is what it looks like.
So only five teams need to lose- or look bad- ahead of us if we want to go to the playoffs. Baylor will take care of itself, ya'know.... if we beat them. At the same time, a win over Baylor will make us leap over MSU. So we only really need three teams to lose. At this point, Oregon losing doesn't really help us because Arizona is ranked ahead of us right now. So we actually need that upset NOT to happen. Alabama losing might actually help us even though they would need to drop A LONG WAY for us to pass them. The funny thing is that Missouri might actually beat them. Bama hasn't looked so good this year and Mizzou has an excellent defense. TCU losing helps us very little, not only will it not happen, if it does happen we look bad for losing to them and ultimately our conference looks worse for not having TCU in the playoffs. Florida State probably will lose this week. They have barely pulled it out against every team they have played this year, and they have to play a great Ga Tech team on Saturday. Ohio State, while being a hot team, has suffered major blows this week. Their starting quarterback got hurt last Saturday, and he wasn't even their starter until their REAL starter got hurt. On top of that, they just discovered that one of their linemen committed suicide. They are a broken team right now. A broken team that has to play a very complete Wisconsin team that boasts the best running back in the nation.
So there we have it. If we beat Baylor and three other games go our way, (out of #1 Bama vs #16 Mizzou... #2 Nike U vs #7 'Zona... #3 TCU vs #88[fpi] ISU.... #4 FSU vs #11 GA Tech.... #5 OSU vs # 12Wisc.) we will go to the playoffs!
